Galilee Boat On Display
'After an apparently long but undistinguished service on the Sea of Galilee, 1,900 years buried in mud, 11 days of salvage excavation, a 300 yard trip to shore and eight years submerged in a liquid wax solution, a remarkable fishing boat from the time of Jesus has now been placed on display.
'Found in January of 1987, along the Sea's southwestern shore, the vessel now sits in the Yigal Allon Museum of Kibbutz Ginnosar 5 miles north of Tiberias. Measuring 26 feet long and 7 feet wide, the wooden boat has been pickled. Wax now replaces the sea water which, over the past 1,900 years, had saturated the wood cells of the ancient vessel. Put on display in October of 1995, it is the first ancient boat ever recovered from the Sea of Galilee.
